Designer Joe Ruggiero’s Latest Sunbrella Collection Struts the Catwalk
Many of the latest home collections stealing the spotlight at High Point Fall 2014 Market draw inspiration from the international catwalk. Fashion-inspired furnishings are a perennial staple in home furnishings and accessories but this season, designers surprised by pushing the creative potential of materials. The Sunbrella fabric collection by Joe Ruggiero is emblematic of this development.

Ruggiero, fabric and furniture designer and HGTV host, unleashed the “drapability” of Sunbrella fabric in his latest collection for Miles Talbott & The M/T Company that first debuted on the catwalk as clothing in five color stories: Cameo, Raspberry, Mist, Denim and Grey.

“We took the show on the road to show that this fabric is luscious and it drapes beautifully. It’s not canvas,” says Ruggiero. Sunbrella’s drapability is evident in a mist colored pattern that cascades as a bed canopy in the Miles Talbott showroom complemented by large-scale photos of succulents on the wall, Ruggiero took with his iPhone and printed on Sunbrella canvases. “I really recommend Sunbrella for beds, the pillows, the coverlets, every bed I design uses Sunbrella fabric,” says Ruggiero.

“I’ve seen a lot of red on the runway. Mr. Valentino, one of the greatest fashion designers, loves red. My interpretation is raspberry—more of a softer red rather than a bright red. I like the combination of the raspberry with the ivory color. We are doing our casegood designs in 20 different painted colors,” says Ruggiero, as he points to a raspberry side table. “It’s very mobile and it goes from room to room.”

“As you probably know, I’m a Californian so I like to create beach houses in my showroom because it reminds me of home. Denim is very important in fashion, going back to the turn of the century. It’s a very livable color, very casual. I’ve always been a big fan of transitional furniture so this furniture can mix with a lot of different pieces such as contemporary chairs,” says Ruggiero.

The denim sofa is from the Maxfield collection, a more formal frame that Ruggiero dressed down. “If you dress it down, it’s comfortable and casual and very much at home in a Malibu environment,” explains Ruggiero.

“I’m seeing a lot of grey on the fashion runways but I actually like the serenity of a grey room,” says Ruggiero. He created a “Horse Country” room that nods to equestrian motifs. “It’s done in greys, not 50 shades of greys just about 17,” quips Ruggiero. The chair features the pattern Visions, an interpretation of menswear in a salt and pepper tweed. “It’s a masculine chair — very sculptural and architectural featuring what I call the jewelry of my furniture, the nail heads.”

The pattern Sensations features a tight herringbone tweed in four colors: parchment, cameo, mist and denim. Other Ruggiero designed Sunbrella patterns exclusive to Miles Talbott include Pebbles, Chipper and Espadrille II, a classic ticking stripe.
